Inspiring yet heartbreaking — This is how a photo of a young boy is being described by several netizens globally.
The DEPED Tambayan Facebook page shared on July 4 a photo of a young boy sporting a used cardboard box as his school bag and it has attracted a lot of attention on social media.
Its caption says: “Wala sa ganda ng school, sa ganda ng damit, sa ganda ng bag ang edukasyon. Ang mahalaga yung determinasyon na makapag aral at makapagtapos. No excuses.”
Many people have expressed in the comments section their eagerness to extend some assistance to the boy in the photo — in cash or kind; schoool things and bags especially.
Some were able to relate to the boy and even shared their own versions of school bag during their difficult times; of having buri leaves woven bag (bayong), plastic bag, donated used bag, among others.
There are those who wished more youth would be inspired by this boy who’s determined to go to school despite material lack. A few others expressed frustration, even anger, towards parents who deprive their children of their needs.
Who is that kid?
Well, actually, the photo shared by DepEd Tambayan dates back to June 2015 and has gone viral globally. Some google searching would show you this result.
The photo was taken in Malaysia, not in the Philippines; as shared with When In Manila by a reader who knew the story behind the picture.
“This picture was taken during the last day of school at a school in the area Pensiangan, Sabah. As the school will close, teachers distribute stock milk to school students. Because students are not to bring the milk container back then with her own creativity she uses the box and use a rope to hold the bag, “ as disclosed by someone named Rozali.
Well, that boy would be three years older by now, and most probably has received some help from people around the world.
What remains significant is the message that the photo conveys. Aspire for education.
Moreover, the viral box boy symbolizes “youth in need of assistance” and we don’t need to look far from where we are when we have the capacity to share with the less fortunate.
We can all be a blessing to someone.
